British Culture: ALPHABET (I)
منذ ٥ أعوامHi all!
I'm writing about British culture.
I thought a cool way to introduce some British culture into the Verbling community would be to work through the alphabet and talk about a topic for each letter.
So, for I we are focusing on.....
The Isle of Wight.
The Isle of Wight is an island off the south coast of England. It is separated from England by the Solent and sits in the English Channel. It’s known for its beaches and seafront promenades such as sandy Shanklin Beach and Ventnor Beach. Dinosaur remains and fossils can be seen in areas like Compton Bay and Yaverland Beach. On the island’s western point, The Needles are 3 huge, white chalk rocks, guarded by a 19th-century lighthouse.
The Isle of Wight has been the home of many influential people, including the poets Swinburne and Tennyson and Queen Victoria, who built her much-loved summer residence and final home Osborne House at East Cowes.
It has long been a summer destination for Brits, an ideal getaway for many since the Victorian times. There are lots of notable cultural events which occur on the Island each year including the Isle of Wight festival and Cowes Week. The Isle of Wight festival is a music festival which has been taking place each summer since 2002, though it originally started in 1968! Cowes Week has been a part of life on the Isle of Wight since 1826. It remains a key part of the British sporting summer calendar and is one of the UK's longest running and most successful sporting events. It now stages up to 40 daily races for around 1,000 boats and is the largest sailing regatta of its kind in the world.
