We live in a big world, full of different cultures. Our world is diverse: we speak different languages, we have different lifestyles, customs, traditions, mentality. Each of us wants to travel, see the world, know other cultures, other peoples and nations. Truth, this is very important, interesting, even helpful, since it gives us many opportunities. But at the same time all this is impossible without knowing languages.
In the contemporary world every person, who wants to be successful, must master some foreign languages. The best solution to learn a language is to travel to the country where you speak. Although it is quite difficult to live abroad, this helps you develop your character, because you need other skills besides language to integrate and be productive in a foreign society. You have to be open, intrepid, sometimes experience your personal limits, go out of your comfort zone and change your routines. They are not bad or destructive, but rather new experiences that help us face challenges and be more flexible in all areas of life. Each trip and time spent in a foreign country learning new cultures improves their ability to integrate into other societies in the future, face the change and the cultural shock. For example, life in Mexico City, which is one of the largest cities in the world, can seem very chaotic, feverish and the change of life be strong when a person goes abroad for the first time.
Travel is not the only reason because the foreign language is useful. The most important thing is that knowing the language, you have great opportunities in the workplace. Day by day our world develops and now, in times of globalization, the labor market has become international. Now, if you do not feel like working in your native country and if you know other languages, you can go abroad to live there. Although each known language develops the person, in the case of competitiveness in the labor market, it is important to choose a correct language. To do so, we must see the modern situation in the world.
Now, developed states are suffering from the economic crisis, while many developing countries are becoming more and more important. Such countries attract people, give them work, money and residence. Today, Latin American countries attract more and more people. The labor market in Latin America today is active and mobile. But working or living there is impossible without knowing the Spanish language.
The Spanish language in terms of the people who speak it as their mother tongue, is the second largest in the world. In total, more than 400 million people in South America, Central America, Mexico, Spain, the Caribbean and in some parts of the United States speak Spanish as their mother tongue and also millions of people, with other mother tongues, speak it with a basic, intermediate or higher level. The influence of Spanish economically and geographically in the Ibero-American world is indisputable. Therefore, most of the Spanish speakers do not know other languages, they do not need it, because they live, travel and develop in a totally Spanish world. That gives us, we speak several languages, advantages when we try to get jobs in organizations and multinational companies operating in Spanish-speaking countries.
Each country has comparative efficiency in different sectors, be it geographical, climatic, political, legal or any other reason. Always, in the economic sense of a state, it is useful to concentrate on products and services that have comparative efficiency to change them for others that are expensive or difficult to produce. For example, it is not smart to grow avocados in Finland because of weather conditions, nor is it reasonable to produce high quality wood products in Mexico, where the technology and the facilities to make them do not exist. On the other hand, it is more logical to produce avocados in Mexico and wood products in Finland, and change them in the market to achieve maximum utility.
As has been shown in the previous paragraph, the Spanish-speaking countries offer us many opportunities for business. Now, many of them are growing economically, have political stability and favorable policies towards business. These are some of the most important factors from the point of view of international trade and investment.
Depending on the source, Spain and Mexico are among the 20 most important countries in the world in terms of GDP, and Argentina is close. In terms of the importance of Finnish international trade, Spain is relevant, but Mexico remains in place 29 and Argentina in position 64. Finnish companies in several sectors, especially forestry, education, telecommunications, energy and clean-tech, have opportunities to increase their export and import of products and services with Latin countries, but they need personnel with Spanish language skills.
We can use our capabilities more to travel, work and do business with different countries. As the Spanish ambassador explained to Spanish students at the Language Center of the University of Helsinki, only 2% of European workers work outside of their native country. The portion of them in Latin America is insignificant. That is strange, because Europeans have always traveled a lot, explored the world and they are relatively well prepared for the challenges they may face in foreign countries.
Languages are important in today’s work life. Increasingly, they show the competitiveness of a person within the globalized world, and allow them to work abroad, but they are also key to individual development. The Finns have realized that the Spanish-speaking countries give us many opportunities. For example, the President of Finland, Sauli Niinistö, visited Mexico with a commission of merchants in May 2015. But there is still much more to do.
The Importance of Spanish Verbs language, which is increasing all the time, means that we have a lot to do in Finland to capture the opportunities. Now, more than ever, due to globalization and the changes in the world, it is worth studying languages and especially Spanish.
