British Culture Alphabet: S
vor 4 JahrenHi all!
I'm writing about British culture.
I thought a cool way to introduce some British culture into the Verbling community would be to work through the alphabet and talk about a topic for each letter.
So, for S we are focusing on.....
Stonehenge
Stonehenge is perhaps the world’s most famous prehistoric monument. Located in Wiltshire, England on Salisbury Plain, it consists of around 100 huge upright stones arranged in a circular layout.
Stonehenge was built around 5,000 years ago. It was built in six stages with academics suggesting that it took around 1,500 to erect the monuments. It is thought that the area was chosen because even in the past it was a rather unusual landscape whereas other areas were covered by woodland.
It consists of a ring of standing stones, each around 13 feet high, seven feet wide, and weighing around 25 tons. Some of the rocks came all the way from a place in Wales
It is not truly known why Stonehenge was built or what it was used for. Previously, it was thought to be a Druid temple, but some believe that it was a burial monument, a meeting place between chiefdoms, or even an astronomical “computer.”
You can still get quite close to Stonehenge if you want to visit but you can’t touch, lean on or climb on the monuments as Stonehenge is protected by law, the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act.
