In the 17th century in France 🇫🇷, there was still no talk of "living on love and fresh water alone" but rather "living on carrots🥕🥕", which meant "living with very little means". Carrot was then a cheap vegetable, often presented as a food of the poor people.

Au XVIIe siècle en France, on ne parlait pas encore de « vivre d’amour et d’eau fraîche » mais plutôt de ne « vivre que de carottes », ce qui signifiait « vivre avec très peu de moyens ». La carotte était alors un légume bon marché, souvent présenté comme un aliment du pauvre.
