Trapped in a kitchen with only a recipe book in English?

Hello there! During the quarantine, we are all practicing our cooking skills, and sometimes the vocabulary can be really confusing!


How to understand basic instructions and know the difference between US measurements and UK ones.

Chop: Cut into pieces with a sharp knife
Finely chop: Cut into tiny pieces
Roughly chop: Cut into large not similar sizes

Stir: Move the liquid around with a spoon

Mix: Put different ingredients together and combine them either by hand or using a food processor

Knead: When you are making bread you first produce dough by mixing flour, milk and yeast. Then you take the dough and massage (knead) it for a period of time.

Whisk: To stir a liquid or eggs in order to mix them.

Batter: (n)(v) A thick liquid made from flour and eggs and spices which is put on fish or chicken which is the fried in hot oil until it is crispy.

American measurement converters are easily available online just type in Cups to Kilograms or whichever conversion you are looking for.

Don´t forget the some countries use Fahrenheit while others use Celsius/Centigrade!
