Academic Speaking
Speaking is perhaps the forgotten skill when it comes to academic English. With so much focus on the written word it is easy to forget that a lot of your time at university will be spent discussing ideas and defending (or critiquing) arguments.
With that in mind here's a collection of different ways of starting a speech in an academic context. Use them wisely and you will start your presentation in a powerful way!
"So what I'd like to start with is..."
"So, who wants to get things going?"
"Let's get the ball rolling."
"What I'd like to discuss today is..."
Having gotten your audiences attention it is then important to keep them focused. In the next post I will introduce some key phrases for making a strong argument!
What's your favorite way to start a presentation? Leave a comment and let me know.
