Student Question
This question came up during a recent conversation about weather. What's the difference between the words 'shadow' and 'shade'?
My Answer
This question had me stumped... and I had to look up the answer after class. Even still, it took me some time to figure out the exact difference.
Basically, 'shadow' and 'shade' refer to the same thing: the dark area that's the result of the sun's rays being blocked. The difference is that 'shadow' is countable and 'shade' isn't (but the dictionary won't tell you thatđ). So simple... and yet so not.
