Brainstorming: stimuli VS. hindrances in learning Italian

Dear Italian language explorers,
some of my students are facing difficulties with their speaking skills. I have asked them, so I thought of asking you as well, these two questions:
What are the number-one-stimuli for you stay active in your learning?
What are the number-one hindrances?
In my direct experience, as active learner of Finnish and Swedish, the number-one stimuli are the courage of other students in taking the actual learning steps  and my strong curiosity for etymology. 
One of the toughest hindrances in speaking a new language is the fear of sounding inappropriate and ridiculous.
