British Culture: ALPHABET (K)

5年前
Hi all!
I'm writing about British culture.
I thought a cool way to introduce some British culture into the Verbling community would be to work through the alphabet and talk about a topic for each letter.
So, for K we are focusing on...

Kings (and Queens) of England

There have been 41 Kings and Queens since 1066. The first of these was William the Conqueror (William I). Whilst there were Anglo-Saxon Kings prior to this date, the date of 1066 is one of great significance in English history. With the Norman Conquest and the installation of the Norman King William I, the Normans practically eradicated what had come before. Within one generation the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy had been completely replaced and the French language, wine drinking and castle building culture of the Normans was installed.

Queen Elizabeth II, the reigning Queen of England, is related to William I and every monarch who has reigned since 1066.

Some of the most famous Kings of England are:

King Henry VIII, who is best known for his six wives and for introducing divorce and Protestantism to country in his own quest to divorce his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.

King John, who is a controversial character. Many regard him as a cruel, greedy King who raised the taxes in order to fund a long war with France. These actions caused the Barons to rebel and led to the signing of the Magna Carta. Magna Carta was issued in June 1215 and was the first document to put into writing the principle that the king and his government was not above the law. John was a hugely unpopular King, so unpopular no King has taken his name ever since.

King Richard III was king of England for two turbulent years. He is best known for being accused of murdering his nephews, the so-called “Princes in the Tower” to protect his throne. He lost his throne to Henry VII. In 2013 the body of King Richard was found in a car park in Leicester.
