Faff about/around (phrasal verb) 
To spend your time doing things that aren't important, instead of the things you should be doing.

I wish you'd stop faffing about and do something useful! 

A faff (noun - thing)
Something that requires a lot of effort or causes slight problems.

Changing the light bulb was a bit of a faff.

A faffer (noun - person)
Someone who wastes time doing unnecessary things, instead of what they should be doing.

I'm trying to finish my essay, but it's taking me a while, because I'm a faffer.
