British Culture Alphabet: P
4 years agoHi all!
I'm writing about British culture.
I thought a cool way to introduce some British culture into the Verbling community would be to work through the alphabet and talk about a topic for each letter.
So, for P we are focusing on.....
Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister, often abbreviated to “PM”, is the head of the UK Government. Interestingly, the office of Prime Minister was not established by the Common Law, by Statute or by a Constitutional document, it is just a long standing convention whereby the leader of the Political Party with the most seats in the House of Commons becomes the Prime Minister. There have been 55 Prime Ministers in total of which two people were women.
The current Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, is a Conservative politician and MP or Member of Parliament for Uxbridge and South Ruislip. Boris Johnson is a Brexiteer meaning that he supports Brexit, the process of the UK leaving the European Union (EU). He has come under scrutiny for his handling of the Coronavirus pandemic in the UK with many believing that he (and also his Government) didn’t act swiftly enough. You can find out more about him here: https://www.gov.uk/government/people/boris-johnson
Number 10 Downing Street is the official residence of the Prime Minister. The street is not accessible to the public and is set behind security gates which are guarded. Downing Street has a resident cat who is called Larry. Larry’s official title is “Chief Mouser” and Larry even has his own twitter account:
