This question came up during a recent conversation about weather. What's the difference between the words 'shadow' and 'shade'?

My Answer 
This question had me stumped... and I had to look up the answer after class. Even still, it took me some time to figure out the exact difference. 

Basically, 'shadow' and 'shade' refer to the same thing: the dark area that's the result of the sun's rays being blocked. The difference is that 'shadow' is countable and 'shade' isn't (but the dictionary won't tell you that😓). So simple... and yet so not.
