Q: How do I get the best Verbling experience?
A: Anybody can use Verbling. For the best experience, use a wired, fast Internet connection and headphones. Encourage your conversation partner to use headphones as well.
Q: How do I extend my conversations with people I talk to?
A: Glad you're enjoying the practice! Click the "+10" button that appears towards the end of your conversation. Both conversation partners need to click the "+10" button in order for your conversation to extend.
Q: Why does it say "You are number 3 in line," above the video window?
A: Many people are connecting to native speakers, and you're currently in line. As soon as a partner becomes available, you'll hear a ring tone and connect automatically. Practice Flashcards in the meantime to improve your vocabulary. You won't lose your place in line!
Q: I can't hear my conversation partner. What should I do?
A: a) Make sure your speakers or headphones are plugged in and turned on. b) Locate the audio/sound control panel on your system and raise your volume. c) Click the "Problem?" button that looks like an exclamation mark (!) and follow instructions.
Q: My conversation partner can't hear me. What should I do?
A: a) Make sure your headphone or microphone system is set up correctly and plugged in. Make a Skype call to a friend to check. b) Locate the audio/sound control panel on your system and adjust the microphone level. c) Sometimes this is due to intermittent system problems. Restart your computer and try again. d) Click the "Problem?" button that looks like an exclamation mark (!) and follow instructions.
Q: My conversation partners are hearing an echo. What should I do?
A: You must use headphones because your system does not support "echo cancellation". This is really important to be a good Verbling citizen and give your conversation partners the best experience.
Q: The sound is choppy and I sometimes see "Connection failed". Why?
A: Our users are from all over the world and their connection quality varies. Most likely, either you or your conversation partner's Internet connection is very slow or has poor quality. If this happens to the point where it's no fun, click the "Problem?" button that looks like an exclamation mark (!) and follow instructions.
Q: The network test frequently reports "Internet unsatisfactory, please improve" or "Internet poor". What does this mean?
A: Your network has poor speed and quality and you will likely experience choppy audio and failed conversations. To have a better Verbling experience, please find better Internet service. Go to an Internet cafe, or try using Verbling with you work or school network. This is really important to be a good Verbling citizen as it affects your conversation partners too.
Q: My network test is good, but my conversations are ending abruptly after only a few seconds or minutes, sometimes indicating "Connection failed."
A: Sometimes this is due to intermittent system problems. Restart your computer and try again.
Q: I have a camera, but I don't see video. Why?
A: Video is enabled only if a) both users have cameras and b) both users must have high quality Internet connections.
Q: How do I end a conversation early?
A: Click the "End conversation" button that looks like a telephone.
Q: I keep getting connected to the same user. How can I prevent that?
A: When any conversation ends, a window will confirm that your conversation has ended. If you want to block the user you just talked to from connecting with you for the rest of the day, uncheck the option: "OK to talk to this person again today."
Q: How can I use Verbling without getting connected automatically when it rings?
A: If you are already in line, just click the link that says "Pause talking." You will not be ringed and connected automatically. Instead, you can browse other pages and you'll hear a light "ping" sound when more native speakers are available. Note that users who choose to connect automatically when it rings will have priority.
Q: How does Verbling handle users who repeatedly end conversations after only a few seconds?
A: If you repeatedly end conversations after only a few seconds, you won't be matched as often as people who practice for 10 minutes. This is because our system encourages those who try to learn from each other for a valuable amount of time. If you have a legitimate problem, please use the "Problems?" button that looks like an exclamation mark (!).
Q: I signed up for the wrong language. How do I change my settings?
A: No worries! Sign into Verbling normally. Then click "Settings" under the arrow in the upper right corner.
Q: Why do I get to a page where it says "Thanks for signing up!"?
A: You've signed up for a language combination we haven't launched yet. Verbling is currently launched for English-Spanish conversation exchange only. We're planning to launch more language combinations in the future.
Q: I forgot my password. What do I do?
A: Don't worry. Reset your password easily.
Q: Can I work at Verbling?
A: Check out our Jobs page!
Q: How do I contact the Verbling team?
A: We love hearing from people!
