Reading between the lines

6 horas atrás
The Fortune Teller (by Jorge Luis Borges)
In Sumatra, someone wants to graduate as a fortune teller. The examiner sorcerer asks him whether he will fail or pass. The candidate answers that he will fail...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this micro-story by the great writer Jorge Luis Borges, we can appreciate the essence of paradox. On the one hand, if the examiner sorcerer fails him, the candidate will have predicted correctly and, therefore, should pass, despite failing the exam. On the other hand, if the examiner passes him, the candidate will have failed in his prediction and should be failed, despite being approved by the examiner. Cross combinations are also possible, but I'll leave the explanation here. What I want to emphasize is that, through a micro-story, we can teach our Spanish students to read between the lines, go beyond the literal, understand the paradox involved, and, in doing so, raise their level of reading comprehension.
