Can you spot the mistake?

I was talking to my friend from France. Her English level is A2 and she made a mistake that lots of people make.
Can you spot it?

Me: “How did you celebrate the New Year?”
Friend: “We played at some games.”
Me: “Sounds like fun!”
Did you find the mistake?

Me: “How did you celebrate the New Year?”
Friend: “We played at some games.”
Me: “Sounds like fun!”

Explanation
The preposition ‘at’ is incorrect.
She should say
“We played some games.”
E.g. We played Monopoly
We played chess.
We played football.
We played tennis.

At or with?
We played football or We played with a football?
Both are correct but what is the difference?
We played football – means we played the game – football.
We played with a football – means we played with the ball but we didn’t play football the game.
E.g. We played catch with a football.
We played catch with a basketball.
We played catch with a tennis ball.
You can play with a thing (a phone, a doll or a toy).
You can play a game (chess, squash, football).
