Cześć! Did you know beer is a very old drink?

This week I have another news for you from the Polski Daily website! If you’re interested in learning more about Polish language and culture, you can sign up for weekly newsletters here: polskidaily.eu!

These days Poland is often seen as a country where people like to drink vodka. It’s not entirely true! Maybe on some important events of the traditional families you can still see the toast with a vodka shot, but among people living in big cities, for the last couple of years it’s other kinds of liqueurs being popular. Toasts are more often made with champagne or wine, and if people go out to the pub, they choose to drink nothing else but beer!
Beer has been known already in the Middle Ages! In the 14th century Polish capital, so at that time – Kraków – there were 16 brewaries. 16! The same number as churches… Today, in the Old Town area we have over 160 churches and not a single brewary… Already then, in the Meadieval times, beer was a drink number one for everybody. From the little children to the oldest seniors – everybody was drinking beer. You wake up in the morning – beer, you go to school – beer, you have a break from work – beer. All day long! But this doesn’t mean they were all alcohol addicts! :D
Simply, water was very dirty back then. All of the dirt and trash was thrown into the river and so did the inside of every toilet. And in the process of brewing, when you heat the beer and add alcohol to it, it would make beer „the safe drink”, it was healthy! And of course, back then beer wouldn’t have as much alcohol in it as it does now. Nowadays it’s something between 5 to 6 %, back then more like 0,5 – 1 %! That’s also why it was a drink for everyone, the elderly and the young.
For the last couple of years, in big Polish cities it’s kind of in fashion to drink beer from all of the micro brewaries. Not only you can try many different kinds of beer, but also try new flavours – the brewers make all kinds – raspberry, banana, coconut, chocolate beers… Have you already tried them? If not, go for it!

Cheers! Dominika
