Multilingualism for success

How many languages do you speak? I came across this really interesting article about how multilingualism offers greater cognitive benefits.
When I was a post-graduate student, I researched the motivations of second-language learning and the social and cultural differences multilingualism creates. A key component of my paper discussed how language learning was often tied into certain personality traits and discussed how, despite learning for work or education purposes, people who learn second or third languages have specific characteristics in common. The aim was to discuss the neuroscience behind language learning.
I still think this is an incredibly interesting topic... What do you think? What drove you to learn a second language? Have you seen how it has affected your cultural and social dynamics? I have found that multilingualism has given me a greater understanding of other communities and helped me to connect to people in a far more authentic manner.
