The 4 Principles for Beginning in Spanish (part 1)

Hi everybody! My name is Jorge Balboa, and I´m a SPANISH teacher for BEGINNERS.

Probably you have listened to this. This principle may sound really simple, and it is, but it’s really important.

The first thing you have to do, even if you are a complete beginner is to immerse in Spanish. Studying grammar, and memorizing long lists of words will be helpful, but immersion will mark a difference.

Think about your own language: Do you know how many grammatical tenses exist?
Did you know your language has grammatical tenses? Even if you don’t know the answer, you can speak your language really well. How is that? You live the principle of Immersion.

WHAT DOES IMMERSION MEAN?

It means changing your environment, it is to be completely surrounded by language. It’s not just reading in Spanish, but also listening, speaking, writing, and watching.

Language is not only about verbal things but also culture, so it’s important to watch people who speak Spanish. Our minds can learn by many senses, so, when you see someone speaking Spanish, put attention to his/her face, expression, facial movements, etcetera.

IDEAS FOR IMMERSION IN SPANISH

Music

There are many good artists who sing in Spanish, look for one you like, I won’t write my favorite ones here, but you can ask me by email if you want to know.

Youtubers

There are Youtubers in Spanish about many different topics: video games, social experiments, interesting info, terror stories, lifestyle, learning Spanish online (that’s me), etcetera. Listening to them is a good way for familiarizing with language and expressions. In general, they speak in a clear way.

Electronic devices

Change the language of your phone, tablet, computer, and apps you usually use in them.

Books

Do you have favorite books? How about reading them in Spanish? A story you already know will be an excellent way for helping you to learn.

Friends

Look for friends who speak Spanish. They don’t live in your city? There are many groups in social media or even websites for meeting people who want to speak. Be participative on those groups and you will win some friends.

Teacher

A native teacher always will be really helpful, he will provide you opportunities for practicing specific skills and topics, will help you in your specific needs. Don´t doubt booking lessons with a good native teacher.

LIVE THE PRINCIPLE OF IMMERSION

In the beginning, living the principle of immersion can be really difficult, because you won’t understand lots of things, but it will be helpful and will become easier with time.

If you think is complicated to start living this principle, just begin with a simple thing: begin listening music in Spanish, and with time decide to add another thing to do in Spanish.

The point is beginning. Begin now to live, at least partially the principle of immersion, and it will help you.

I also recommend you to look for someone to help you to learn. A teacher or mentor will be really helpful for living the principle of immersion, because it will give you the opportunity, not only to listen, but also to speak, to interact, to be corrected, and to receive feedback.
