Top 4 funniest Italian–English false friends

1. Barista vs Barrister
Your italian friend has started working in a new bar, as a "barista", he told you. And you ask yourself why bars in Italy need lawyers.

Barista in Italian means barman, not lawyer.

2. Morbido vs Morbid
You and an italian friend go to the cinema and watch a super creepy horror movie. “Che morbido!” you say to your friend.
But your friend thinks that the serial killer doesn’t look soft at all.

Morbido in Italian means soft, not morbid. For that, you want to say morboso.

3. Preservativo vs Preservative
You’re at the supermarket, looking for some breakfast cereals and ask an employee: “Dove sono i cereali senza preservativi?” The man calls the manager to escort you out of the store, because you just asked for cereal without condoms.

If you want food without preservatives, use “senza conservanti.”

4. Asso vs Ass
You and your italian friend are playing a new flying simulator. He is very impressed by your skills and tells you "Sei un asso!".

You ask yourself why he told you such a mean thing. But he actually said you're an "ace".

For me, learning a language means improving yourself, enriching your life, meeting new friends, essentially acquiring a skill that you can use to make your life richer. This is why my lessons have a strong human and communicative component. I plan my lessons to help my students achieve their goals and meet their personal needs. Do you need to practice speaking? We can do conversation-based activities, talking about things that are interesting to you, and improve your fluency and your pronunciation. Do you want to improve your writing skills? I can correct your mistakes and raise your grammatical and textual awareness. Send me a message or book a trial lesson and we can talk about what you'd like to focus on. And, if you're not sure which aspects of the language you need to improve, I can choose the most appropriate activities based on your level and mistakes that I notice throughout the lesson.
