Diferença entre emigrante e imigrante

As palavras emigrante e imigrante podem ser facilmente confundidas graças à sua grafia semelhante e de ter um significado comum de migrar (=que ou o que muda de país ou de região).

A diferença está no ponto de vista em que olhamos, ou seja, emigrante significa “que sai da sua região ou do seu país para se estabelecer noutro”, enquanto que, imigrante significa “que se estabelece em região ou país diferente do seu”.

Esta diferença reside no facto de o prefixo e- indicar “movimento para fora” e de o prefixo i- que indica “movimento para dentro”.

Então vamos a dois exemplos:

1) Um português que vai trabalhar para França. Relativamente a Portugal, ele é um emigrante. E relativamente a França, é um imigrante.
2) Há cada vez mais italianos a viverem em Portugal. Relativamente a Portugal, estas pessoas são imigrantes. E relativamente a Itália, são emigrantes.

Esta lógica aplica-se também às palavras emigrar/imigrar e emigração/imigração.
