Eight New English Words for 2019

Did you know that every year, new words are added to English dictionaries? The Oxford English dictionary and Miriam-Webster dictionary both add hundreds of words each year. Here are eight of the new Miriam-Webster words in 2019. I've only included words that I know and have heard in regular conversation (not the obscure ones!). How many of them do you know? What trends do you see among them?

Vacay - abbreviated form of vacation

Peak - at the height of popularity, use, or attention

On-brand - something that conveys a brand's image or identity

Pickleball - a game played with paddles and a plastic ball on a court

Snowflake - someone who is thought of as special or who is overly sensitive

Gig economy - freelance workers performing jobs, rather than employees (like Verbling!)

Gender nonconforming - showing traits that are not usually associated with one's gender

Screen time - the amount of time someone spends in front of a screen (such as a computer or phone; this is in addition to the previous usage of screen time, meaning the time an actor or actress was on-screen in a show or movie)

I have taught English since 2010. TEACHING STYLE: My classes are customized to your individual needs and goals. If you need to need to learn English to use in a specific situation, I will help you learn the necessary vocabulary and grammar. You will speak a lot during class. My classes are focused primarily on speaking skills. I use the Communicative Approach for teaching. The Communicative Approach is based on the idea that language is for communicating, not for taking exams. I help students become more fluent and confident in their English communication skills. VERBLING CLASSES: Verbling classes work best when you use a computer. I often send links during class, so please use a computer. I also strongly recommend using a camera.
