IELTS SPEAKING TEST HINTS
Make Good Use of the Questions Asked
If the situation was an ordinary conversation, it would be perfectly reasonable to answer some of the questions with a short one or two word answer, but this is not an ordinary conversation.
Ordinary Conversation:
Question: Where are you from?
Answer: Germany
Questions: Which part of Germany?
Notice that the questioner has asked a second question to get more details.
In parts one and two of the IELTS Test the examiner cannot ask follow up/further questions to find out information you should have told him/her in the first place.
Formal IELTS Interview
Question: Where are you from?
Answer: Germany, Hamburg, It’s in the north of Germany and is a very busy city with a population of over one and a half million people, but actually I live about 15 kilometers out of town on a small farm.
Do not fall into the trap of trying to impress with large words and complex explanations. In general, it’s better to give simple and accurate answer than complex, inaccurate answers. Simple answers, however, do not mean one-word answers.
The examiner is listening for a level of fluency, and hesitation does not help your overall Band Score.
Do not be afraid to correct yourself if you make grammatical mistakes.
Do not take too long to answer each question.
