Answer: "I waited at the cinema for an hour, but my friend didn't turn up. I suppose she must have forgotten."

If you made any mistakes, think about why:

  • Was the word pronounced strangely?
  • Was it difficult to hear because it was connected to other words?
  • Was it because you didn't know the word?
Trying to understand the reasons for your problems will help you to become a better listener over time.

About the sentence

to turn up = to appear or arrive somewhere unexpectedly. e.g. "She hadn't been invited to the wedding, so all the guests were surprise when she turned up at the church".

When this phrasal verb is used negatively, it means that someone was expected, but they did not appear or arrive. e.g. "I'm a bit worried about Sarah - she hasn't turned up for class all week".

Practice questions

  • Have you ever turned up at a party or event without being invited? What happened?
  • When was the last time someone didn't turn up after you had arranged to meet them?
