思い出のサン・フランシスコ

ALOHA, everyone! こんにちは。
さて、先日(せんじつ)、サン・フランシスコにいる生徒(せいと)さんとのレッスンがありました。
この生徒さんのご主人(しゅじん)は、日本人です。彼女は日本語を話せるように(はなせるように)なりたいのですが、家(いえ)ではご主人とほとんど英語(えいご)しか話さないそうです。彼女はとても勉強熱心で、将来(しょうらい)は日本語の本を読みたいんだそうです。
Well, the other day, I had a lesson with one of my students who lives in San Francisco. Her husband is from Japan. She and her husband speak only in English at home although she wants to study Japanese, which makes it very hard for her Japanese to improve and she decided to take lessons with me. She is a very enthusiastic student, she says her ultimate goal is to be able to read Japanese books.

この日のレッスンでは、前の週(まえのしゅう)に出したDictationのHomeworkレビューをしました。その中で、「~といえば、・・・」という表現が出てきました。
これは、“Speaking of ~, (what comes up to mind)という意味で、JLPT N3レベルだそうです。
In that day’s lesson, we reviewed a dictation homework from previous week.
In the topic, there was a phrase, “~といえば(to ieba)、・・・” which means “speaking of ~” and would be JLPT N3 level.

私は「ところで、サン・フランシスコといえば・・・??」と彼女に聞いて、答えを待ちました。彼女は、しばらく考えてから、「ゴールデンゲート橋(ばし)」と言いました。
そうですね。ゴールデンゲートブリッジ、あの堂々とした橋は、サン・フランシスコの顔ですね。
I asked her “By the way, speaking of San Francisco… (what comes up to mind)?“and waited for her to respond.
After a few pause, she answered, “ゴールデンゲート(Golden Gate)…橋(ばし)”
True! Golden Gate Bridge, that magnificent look undoubtedly represents San Francisco, doesn’t it?

ちなみに、私の頭に思い浮かんだのは「クラム・チャウダー」でした。そう言ったら彼女に笑われました。
By the way, because it came up to my mind I said, “Clam Chowder” and she laughed.

I’m serious! I really enjoyed my clam chowder dinner I had at the pier area during my 2 day stay in Cisco.

Hi there! My name is Yukiko. I am a native Japanese speaker and live in the United States. I studied the effective method of teaching Japanese language to non-native speakers and got certified. I offer tailored lessons for each student since each student's needs and level is different. I make customized learning materials according to each student's learning stage, but you're welcome to bring a material you wish to use, especially if you have a JLPT goal.👌 If you would like to focus mainly on conversation, let's talk! The key to improve your speaking is to voice out and repeat👄(^^♪ No hesitation! 🤔 Even if you don't have enough vocab yet, try to use whatever words you have learned so far in your sentence. DON'T BE SHY! Also, in Japanese, pitch accent is very important. For Pre-beginner&Beginner students, I don't just push them to memorizing Hiragana/Katakana characters, however, this part is the first fundamental of learning Japanese language. Students are encouraged to learn...
