Having cold feet on a red letter day - Idiomatic English
5 years agoHi Verbling!
Have you ever had cold feet?
There is a very well-known saying, "You have / He/She has cold feet" meaning that you are anxious and uncertain about something. It's most often used in relation to weddings.
In South Africa, we also have a saying relating to cold hands, (in Afrikaans), "koue hande, warm liefde", which translates to "cold hands, warm love" - with the implied meaning that people who have cold hands generally are very loving.
What about "a red letter day"?
Well, a red-letter day, is a lesser-known idiom referring to a day of great importance, a day to celebrate.
So, it's not unusual to have cold feet on a red letter day, if that day happens to be your wedding day!
Have a great day,
Ari
