The word 'beach'...
5 anos atrásI have been helping a few of my students to pronounce this word lately. Of course, it is a noun which describes an area of sand or small stones near to the sea or the river. However, many speakers of different languages really struggle with pronouncing the 'ea' sound in the middle of the word.
This can be embarrassing for them when they use it in public, because they pronounce it to rhyme with 'stitch' or 'pitch', and this sounds like the English word 'bitch', which means a female dog or...something not so nice!
When native English speakers pronounce 'beach', we really widen the mouth, like we do we do when we are talking about the fruit 'peach', and we hold that position for a little bit longer than for 'stitch' or 'pitch'.
If you like going to the beach, perhaps you can remember it this way: when you say 'beach', it should look like you are smiling!
