As one of those most commonly used modal verbs in English, "can" can be used to express: ability, possibility, ask/give permission, request or offer.

- subject + cannot + verb  (we often use the contraction can't)
? can + subject + verb
 
I can play football. ability
Smoking can cause health issues. possibility
Can I ask you a few questions? ask permission
