What is the difference between 這 (Zhè) and 者 (Zhě)？

大家好 Verbling community,

I've been studying Mandarin and I just started learning characters, but I'm not super convinced by the dictionary definition I came across online as I'm trying to understand what does 者 (Zhě) really means. Anybody could help me figure out what's the difference between  這 (Zhè) and 者 (Zhě)？I'm mostly familiar with 這 (Zhè) which I use for something like: "這是什麼?" However, I'm not quite sure I understand the context of 者 (Zhě) is it something you'd use by itself or it's mostly a character that is paired with other words?
