Which is the most terrible book you have ever read?

I was recommended to read Robert Graves' Goodbye to All That when I was studying for A-Level English Literature. It's terrible in the subject matter, but a good book an amazing book by an absolute master, because it made an impression on my young mind. Here is a wonderful quotation I found on goodreads.

It's about the First World War, it's explicit, but it is also powerful and I would recommend it not only for the enrichment of vocabulary but also for understanding life in a deeper way. I read this a long time ago, but it is one of those impressions that sticks with you, even though you forget the details.

“Cuinchy bred rats. They came up from the canal, fed on the plentiful corpses, and multiplied exceedingly. While I stayed here with the Welsh, a new officer joined the company... When he turned in that night, he heard a scuffling, shone his torch on the bed, and found two rats on his blanket tussling for the possession of a severed hand.” ― Robert Graves, Goodbye to All That
