3 reasons to try online language learning

There are about as many methods for learning a foreign language as there are languages out there, so why should you choose online learning over, let's say, learning from a text book?

1. Complete Engagement

Like a class conducted in-person, online language learning allows you to engage with a native speaker in real time.

Verb charts and language books will only get you so far when learning a language. Even watching television in a foreign language (a great exercise for building vocabulary and practicing your listening) is one-sided.

If you want to take your language learning to the next level, you have to speak. More than that, you have to engage in a real conversation, preferably with a native speaker, and preferably with a teacher who has experience helping other students achieve their language goals.

Moreover, a conversation isn't complete without body language, intonations and, most importantly, responses from another person—things you can't get from a book or movie. Through conversation, you translate that abstract information you learned in a verb chart into a real conversation. It's how you begin to hear and use native level word collocations. And it's how you fine tune your pronunciation.

These are all benefits you can get from an online class.

2. A Range of Teachers

Okay then, you might be asking yourself, "Why not just take a class in-person?"

Let's face it, not everyone learns a language the same way. Furthermore, not every teacher teaches the same way. I have taught students who wanted to learn purely through conversation and others who needed a clear explanation of the grammar principles of English before they could say a word.

While there might be some best practices to guide us, it's clear that we all have different needs when it comes to language learning. If you want to stay motivated and see improvements, it is crucial you find a teacher with whom you click.

That's where online teaching comes in.

Many language institutes out there do a great job of pairing students with proper teachers based on their language level and learning style. But this still can't compare to the range of teachers you have available online.

Moreover, who knows your learning style and language needs better than you do?

Online language learning gives you the opportunity to find a teacher who fits your learning style and language needs perfectly.

3. Online Language Tools

Last but not least: Online learning offers you some amazing online tools that you don't always have in a classroom.

Here's a list of just a few:

  1. Open Scheduling - For busy students and working professionals, it isn't always possible to adjust your schedule in order to make it to an in-person class. With online learning you have control over your class times.

  1. Easy Information Sharing - I love a good paper handout, but even I have to admit: PDFs are a lot easier. Online language learning allows me to share slide presentations, interesting articles, vocabulary lists, and assignments all with the click of a button. It's never been easier for students to get the information they need.

  1. A Social Network of Learners - Finally, having a network of learners with whom you can share ideas, advice and resources is invaluable to your language learning. Speaking a language is all about connecting with others anyway; it's amazing that we can now do that with anyone around the world.
