Do Italians understand Spanish?

イタリアSpanish and Italian are the languages m in the world with the strongest relationship. It is difficult to find other tongues so similar. In my experience, as Italian native speaker, I was able to understand 70%-80% of a Spanish conversation, although I had never studied this language.
Furthermore, studying few hours a week in less than 5/ 6 months , I reached the upper intermediate level. With other languages, I would need more than 2 or 3 years, starting from scratch.
When I'm in Spain, I don't feel abroad. Sometimes I think that we Italians and Spaniards speak two varieties of the same language.
When an Italian meets a Spaniard (or viceversa), even though both of them have no knowledge of the language of the other, of course they likely communicate in a mix italo-spanish rather than another language (English or others)
I feel that way too, Ignazio, but I think it is not that easy for everyone. They are two very similar languages, but some people seem to not find it so easy to understand each other - I believe that it is easier for bilingual people to understand other language, because our mindset is different, more open to understanding different speech patterns.
This is just partially true. If an Italian person that has never studied any Spanish would watch the Spanish television would probably understand just 20-30 % out of what they are saying. The languages are similar in terms of vocabulary, in the same way, Portuguese or French is. However, the logic of the language is way different and also the use of the tenses. Also, there are many false cognitive between Italian & Spanish. So, from my experience as a foreign a foreign language educator in Italy, many Italians or Italian speakers think they can speak or understand Spanish, but in reality, they don't.
I am Italian and I speak fluent Spanish now, so I barely remember how it was when I didn't speak it 😅 , but I think it is possibile for Italians to understand the general meaning of a Spanish speech from Spain, but not all the details, also because Spanish is one of the fastest languages in the world. It also depends a lot on the accent, some are more difficult like those from Adalucia or Spanish from Latin America. Then moving from understanding to speaking and writing fluently, is a whole different thing. Spanish must be studied because it has different rules from Italian and people who do not study it thoroughly risk interference from Italian and might end up speaking "Itañol" 😅 .
