¿Conoces el origen de la Flor de Nochebuena?

A propósito de estas fechas, próximas a la Navidad, quiero compartirles algunos datos interesantes sobre esta Flor, originaria de México y ya conocida en muchos lugares del mundo, como símbolo de la Navidad.

Los indígenas la llamaban Cuetlaxóchitl, que según algunas fuentes significa "Flor que se marchita" (que viene del Náhuatl, cuetlahui, marchitar y de xóchitl, flor) , aunque en la actualidad es conocida como Nochebuena, flor de Pascua, Pastora, Estrella de la Navidad, etcétera.

Es muy poca la información que podemos encontrar sobre ella, pero la más aceptada es que era cultivada al sur de México, en los ahora estados de Guerrero, Michoacán, Oaxaca y Chiapas.   Los indígenas, se cuenta, la usaban para hacer pigmentos y en remedios herbales e incluso como ofrenda a Tonanzin, la Diosa de la tierra. A Europa la llevaron los españoles durante el tiempo que México fue colonia española.  Cuando México alcanzó su independencia, en 1821, el primer embajador de Estados Unidos en México conoció la planta en una ciudad llamada Taxco, en el estado de Guerrero.

Este diplomático, de apellido Poinsett  era un entusiasta de la botánica y se quedó sorprendido por la belleza de la flor, que sólo florece durante los últimos meses del año.

Compró varios ejemplares y los envió a Estados Unidos donde la planta fue presentada por primera vez en un exposición comercial en 1929, en Filadelfia.
Más tarde, usaron el apellido del diplomático para nombrarla, por lo que también se conoce como Poinsettia. Su hermoso color rojo, profundo y vibrante es asociado a la Navidad y las celebraciones religiosas de fin de año en todo el mundo, precisamente porque esta planta florece sólo en los últimos meses del año.
