Kyoto is famous for ...?

Hi, This is Japanese tutor Molly.

In the previous post, I wrote about the charm of Osaka, where I live currently. Today I'm going to write about Kyoto, which is probably the most famous Japanese city in the world.

Kyoto is always No.1 tourist destination in Japan. Now, here's a question about Kyoto. Give it a try!

What's Kyoto famous for?

A. Temples and shrines
B. Ramen noodles
C. Bakeries

Hahaha, is it unexpected? If you feel it's a piece of cake, you must be a connoisseur of Kyoto!

As you know, Kyoto has about 1200-year history. The imperial families had lived in Kyoto for more than 1000 years until the modern era. Currently they live in Tokyo.

17 places in Kyoto are designated as the World Heritage sites, which include Kiyomizudera-temple and Kinkakuji-temple, which are super popular among tourists.

On the other side, Kyoto is one of the modern major cities in Japan which leads Japanese economy.

Did you know that Kyoto is the birthplace for Nintendo, the world leading game company?

Let's go back to the question! As one of the modern faces, Kyoto is famous for as 'ramen prefecture'. According to a survey about ramen, Kyoto is ranked 7th out of all 47 prefectures, ranked 1st in the western part of Japan.

When driving in Kyoto, you can see many ramen stands with a big yellow billboard. Curiously, the billboards of ramen stands are usually yellow. I don't know why.

Now let's talk about bread! We eat rice but love bread as well! I eat bread every day.

Kyoto is really famous for its bread. According to a research, Kyoto is ranked 1st for the amount of bread consumption and ranked 2nd for the number of bakeries.

When walking in Kyoto, you will find hundreds of bakeries and cafes where you can try scrumptious bread. I sometimes go to Shinshindou cafe or Sizuya to look for flavorsome bread. Next time you come to Kyoto, drop by ramen stands and bakeries after visiting World Heritage sites.
