About Me

(Español abajo/Português em baixo)
Hi, I'm Azumi from Yokohama, Japan. I can teach you Japanese in English, Spanish and Portuguese! I was born in Tokyo, raised in Yokohama and schooled in Vancouver, Canada. I have taught Japanese since 2004 in 3 different countries: Canada, Colombia and Brasil. I teach from beginner's levels to preps for Japanese Language Proficiency Exam (JLPT) levels N5-N1 or the exams for the scholarships offered by the Japanese Embassy, called MEXT. I have many students who have passed N1 and N2, won the MEXT scholarships and are studying or working in Japan! I also worked in Colombia as a Japanese-English-Spanish translator and interpreter for 10 years, mainly in international technical cooperation projects. The strength in my teaching is that I can explain Japanese grammar with comparisons to English, Spanish or Portuguese. When a student asks a question about Japanese, seldom do I say "because that's how it works". I can provide you a clear explanation for everything that has explanation! I can promise you you will have a lot of fun in my lesson!

I began teaching Japanese at my university's volunteer program. I taught at Centro de Idiomas Asiáticos (Bogotá, Colombia). However, I have mostly taught as freelance, since it allows me to design different content and advance at an appropriate pace for each student.I teach from beginner's levels to preps for Japanese Language Proficiency Exam (JLPT) levels N5-N1 or the exams for the scholarships offered by the Japanese Embassy, called MEXT. I have many students who have passed N1 and N2, won the MEXT scholarships and are studying or working in Japan.

After taking lessons with Azumi, I was finally able to pass JLPT N1! Lessons are always informative and entertaining, and Azumi's general language and culture knowledge helps give context to make even difficult concepts much easier to consume.

Azumi has been an excellent Japanese teacher! I have previously learned other languages from different teachers, and Azumi has been by far the best language teacher I've had in many years. I've been working with her for almost 2 years, starting as a complete beginner, and made a lot of progress. It has been fun, challenging, and rewarding!

Azumi is a fantastic teacher. I've been learning Japanese on and off for some time now but it wasn't until I started learning with Azumi earlier this year that I really started progressing at a good pace. Our lessons are structured so we cover JLPT content and still have time for conversation practice. She answers any question I have about things outside of class really quickly. She has also helped plan lessons around particular topics/conversation scenarios I've wanted to learn more about too.
