About Me
Hi, ともこです。I'm an experienced Japanese teacher and also a Japanese calligraphy artist.I was born and grew up in Japan, and I have been living in Australia for about 8 years. I love the beaches and natural landscapes here!
.
I used to work at schools teaching English in Japan, and teaching Japanese in Australia. I run Japanese calligraphy workshops in Australia, too. I'm fluent in English, and can help explain Japanese grammar and vocabulary - great for beginners and for tricky advanced topics!
.
I have been teaching Japanese for the past 6 years, and have helped my students at all levels - basic to advanced, including business Japanese. My classes are usually conversation-based and customised to my students' language needs, whether it be grammar, idioms, vocabulary, or pronunciation.
.
If you have something specific you need to prepare for, such as an upcoming interview or presentation, I can definitely help you with that! I am also happy to answer any questions you have about material you are learning in other Japanese classes or by yourself, and help with document editing/proofreading.
.
I want my class to be relaxed, casual and hopefully a bit of fun!
.
-Fun conversation (all levels)
I was an assistant journalist, I love reading, I’m a Japanese calligraphy artist and a miso maker (hopefully you like miso soup!) I have so many things to share with you! I’m an Osaka person, which means I love joking around. I’ll correct your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, and explain if necessary (in English, if you like.)
.
-Beginners GENKI 1&2
The lessons include conversation practice covering grammar and vocabulary you’ve studied. I have lots of my own worksheets to practice each grammar topic, so that you can master each grammar point quickly.
.
-Intermediate TOBIRA, QUARTET
For students who are using “Tobira”, "Quartet", “An Integrated Approach to Intermediate Japanese”, and for those preparing for JLPT N1-3.
For both Beginner and Intermediate lessons, I will give you homework for each lesson. We also discuss the next lesson plan at the end of each lesson, so if you have time, you can prepare by reading or completing the parts of the chapter you will learn for the next lesson. That way you will be able to learn much quicker, and we can have more conversation time, or practice parts that you found difficult.
I can also help you study for your JLPT, as I have a variety of exercise sheets and practice examinations for you to work on : )
I can explain and teach in English if necessary, or only in Japanese if you prefer : )
-Customised lessons
I provide tailored lessons for you, such as preparation for JLPT, text books you’re working with, preparation for travel, interview, presentations and document editing/proofreading... and more!

For anyone looking to learn Japanese, I wholeheartedly recommend choosing Tomoko-sensei as their teacher. In the past few months, thanks to her teaching, my Japanese abilities have significantly progressed. Because of her strong command of both English and Japanese, she easily explains nuanced language problems and questions in an understandable way. Whether you're a beginner student or an advanced student, she is always prepared with resources and worksheets to learn from and practice with. Her lessons are structured very similarly to a language school course, except you receive one on one attention. If you're looking to seriously improve your Japanese, Tomoko-sensei is the by far the best choice.

My husband and I are beginners and have had a great learning experience. Her English is good enough to explain as needed while she continues to build our Japanese language skills. She has a professional teaching structure but adds in cultural insights, creative and interesting materials, and home practice material. She is very patient and enthusiastic to continue to motivate us.
