admit - confess
7 anos atráshi there! Are there any differences between confess and admit? when I use the dictionary it shows me the same thing in Turkish.
You won't admit you love me And so how am I ever to know? You only tell me Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps
So if you really love me, say yes But if you don't, dear, confess And please don't tell me Perhaps, perhaps, perhaps

Admit isn't necessarily a secret, it's just something you recognize as truth and you choose to tell. Confess is generally something you didn't want someone to know, but you have chosen to tell it. Does that make sense?

thank you so much ! if someone is forcing me to tell the truth , this is a confession . i think admit is kind of a self - criticism. there is no forcing to tell anything about me. that was short and effective explanation !
Hi Emre,
Yes, they are not identical synonyms. These are some differences:
- Confess: telling something that is difficult to tell because you find it embarrassing or it's a crime, a sin, a weakness, or something otherwise unpleasant to admit. And, you confess something to someone not to yourself. Confession can also be made for religious reasons (to a priest) or in front of a judge or jury. Confessing usually has consequences, carries a penalty or is meant to be either punished or forgiven, since it implies guilt.
- Admit means acceptance. When you admit that you feel something, it can be a confession to somebody or you can admit it to yourself. The word "admit" also means "allow entrance", "let somebody or something to get in". Admitting does not necessarily imply feeling guilty, having committed a crime or a sin; you can admit that someone is right and you are wrong, for example.
EXAMPLES:
He confessed all his sins to his priest, seeking forgiveness before he died.
The murderer ended up confessing his crime in front of the jury. He will go to jail.
She will never admit that you are right, she always wants to be right, even when it is obvious that she isn't.
At least admit that you made a mistake! Alright, I admit that I made a mistake.
Wow, Jackie! That's a pretty amazing, clear and comprehensive explanation. (...My own thoughts on seeing the question was to groan and harrumph and oooh a bit and ahhhh a bit and hmmmm a bit. I have to admit (and, maybe, also to confess!) I was so relieved when I noticed you'd beaten me to it!)
Lol, thank you David, you are too kind! Actually, I love the challenge of explaining words. It's something I have to do often, at least in my head, when I translate texts (my other job), and I enjoy it.

this is a amazing explanation ! finally i understand both of differences. thank you so much !
