Why is everything up?
How are you doing? What are you up to? what's up and what's down?Phrasal verbs are a nightmare right? why can't we just say what we mean? Well that would be boring wouldn't it? ;)
Through teaching I have realized that there are certain phrasal verbs in which as a native you wouldn't think about not using in a natural conversation. Here is one example. If I wanted to know if you have a good relationship with your boss I am likely to ask "Do you get along with your boss" if you need to collect your children from school I might ask "What time do you have to pick up your children?"
You might be wondering why everything is up! we get up, we wash up, we make up lies, we back up our friends, we stand up to adversity, we give up when things frustrate us and we try to live up to our parents expectations and we mess up opportunities given to us.
My advice to anyone who is put off by phrasal verbs is to embrace them and see them for what they are. Peculiar and wonderful
