Learning Chinese

I've been learning chinese for over a year now, although I took a break for 3 months to focus on work and other things in life.
My old teacher just doesn't have the same timings as me so I'm looking for a chinese teacher. But before looking, I just wanted to ask the community here a few questions:
Is it more common to teach using only a book? Because I find that I learn much faster using flashcards, quizzes, music and movies rather than just reading a book.
When students have a problem remembering certain things, even after 3 classes. What's the best method to help? I struggle with this a lot.
