(I'll answer in English for anyone who is really a beginner in Chinese and can't read that much)
For me, the first step toward learning Chinese was to learn 拼音 (pinyin), the phonetic system used for reading Chinese. This helped immensely with learning how to properly pronounce Chinese words, and for me, once I can hear myself say it, it's easier to remember.
Yes, I learned a little bit about tone in my first Chinese class and my teacher was very good at helping me hear the tones and understand their importance in the Chinese language. It is difficult! So, for my first classes I would like to learn about tones and pinyin, then some vocabulary and sentences that I can use to start communicating (saying greetings, asking where I can find a street or a product at a store, for example).
I am very intrigued about Chinese characters and I find them very beautiful and, even though I've been told by many different people that Chinese writing is very difficult to learn, I would love to be able to learn at least a few characters :)
Although Chinese characters are difficult, but the learning method is correct, it will be easier. At the beginning of the study, you can improve the enjoyment of text learning through pictures and colors. In fact, Chinese characters have many interesting meanings. For example, "休" is often used in the word rest(休息). When looked at, it is a human(人) character and a wooden(木) character, which means that people rely on the tree(the meaning of wood is the tree). What did the man depend on beside the tree? Imagine that people are resting. After knowing this meaning, you can remember this word through the radicals(亻) and tree(木). There are many interesting ways to remember. Learning Chinese characters is very interesting.Don't be afraid.
