Learn Russian with the help of Poetry. (A.Block's Poem)
3 年前One of the best way to learn and practice Russian - to learn poems. Written in Saint Petersburg in 1912, its philosophical mood reflects the eternal issue.
Ночь, улица, фонарь, аптека,
Бессмысленный и тусклый свет.
Живи ещё хоть четверть века —
Всё будет так. Исхода нет.
Умрёшь — начнёшь опять сначала
И повторится всё, как встарь:
Ночь, ледяная рябь канала,
Аптека, улица, фонарь.
English translation:
Night, street, lantern, pharmacy,
Pointless and dim light.
Live even for a quarter of a century -
Everything will be the same. There is no exit.
If you die, it will start over again
And everything will go over as formerly:
Night, icy ripples of the canal,
Pharmacy, street, lantern.
Vocabulary (nouns):
Ночь (noch') - Night
улица (oolitsa) - street
фонарь (fonur') - lantern
аптека (upt'eka) - pharmacy
свет (svet) - light

When I was 15 or 16 I had a summer job with lots of time for reading. In one summer I read dozens of books, many of them Russian classic novels (in English). Later I was a student in a first-ever Russian language course in my high school. Just one year. I need more formal education now; I will be fluent. Reading more in the original language will be my goal and my motivation. Thanks for sharing Blok's poem.
Hi Elizaveta, thanks for your question. Favorite story - Gooseberries Favorite poet - Yevtushenko. Favorite book - I have to say War and Peace. Almost all American students had to read War and Peace in the past; most only remember it was very long. I visited Yasnaya Polyana in 2018. Wow. Now favorite book - Master and Margarita. I'm beginning to read it in the original. Do you have favorite English books?
