10 Ways to Make Language Learning More Fun
Learning a new language can be hard and overwhelming. Sometimes it seems that we need to change everything we are doing to be able to learn a new language. As I was learning Spanish, sometimes I got tired of reading the dictionary or writing new words down. However, I found some ways to make it more enjoyable. Learning a new language can be fun, and it can become a part of our normal, everyday lives. Here are some tricks I have found to make language learning easier and more fun.
1. Watch a familiar movie in the language you are learning
Movies can seem overwhelming with all of the dialogue, but they can be a fun way to help you learn some new words. They can also help you practice understanding people who are speaking the language at a normal pace. If you watch a familiar movie, it will be easier to pick up words and phrases. If you are struggling to learn new words, you can also watch the movie with subtitles in your native language, but make sure to pay attention to the audio too! For an extra level of difficulty, instead of subtitles in your native language, you can put the subtitles in the language you are learning. This can help you know how to pronounce words and recognize them in writing.
2. Play the word game
The word game is great, because it can be played anywhere- on a walk, on a drive, or sitting in your home. It can also be played alone or with a friend! The point of the game is to look around where you are and point out objects or colors and say what they are called in the language you are learning. If you know the word, say it. If you don't know a word, you can ask a friend or look it up. If you are playing with a friend, you can take turns or see who can get the most words. Knowing simple words can help you form sentences and become more fluent in your language. This game can help you learn words that are the most useful in everyday conversations.
3. Listen to music in the language you are learning
Listening to new music or your favorite songs in the language that you are learning will help you become more familiar with words and phrases. It is great to do while you are driving to work or making dinner.
4. Read a book in the language you are learning
Start with a children's book. These are great for starting a language, as you pick up the language, you can go to short stories and novels. Reading a book can be a fun way to test your knowledge and find out some new things you can practice in your new language. You can find books in other languages online or at your local library.
5. Call or talk to a native speaker
Practicing conversations with a native speaker is the best way to get better at the language you are learning. This is a fun way to build friendships, but also improve your accent, your fluency, expand your vocabulary, and build your confidence.
6. Think like a little kid
Children aren't afraid of making mistakes, and that's what makes them great language learners. Don't be afraid to try to new things and continue learning. If you make a mistake, it's ok. Mistakes are one of the best ways to help us learn and improve. We learn a lot more words by making mistakes than using words we already know.
7. Listen to Advertisements
Advertisements on the radio or television are a great way to listen to the accent and speed of the language you are learning. It's a fun way to practice in between your normal music or tv show. At the end of the advertisement, try to summarize to yourself what the advertisement was about. That is one of the ways to make listening to the advertisement useful for your learning.
8. Try and memorize a joke or poem in the language you are learning
This can be good way to learn sayings, idioms, and learn some humor. Humor is a great way to connect with people, and you will enjoy remembering something fun.
9. Teach something you learn to a friend
Teaching a friend some new words or phrases you learn will help you retain your new knowledge. It is also a fun conversation to have. Your friend will benefit because they will learn something new!
10. Try a fun app
There are many free apps and programs available through your app store or your local library to help you learn your new language! Apps are a great way to supplement your language learning. Some of these apps have fun little games or quizzes to teach you new words or phrases, and they keep track of your progress. Apps are great to use when you are waiting at the bus stop or the doctor's office. They are fun and fast!
Language learning can be entertaining and easily brought into our everyday lives.
